All generalizations can be criticized because they assume too much, don't take into account the "exceptions" and so on. No particular skill is required to point that out.

It is customary for the one making a generalization to be able to point to some evidence supporting it.

Well, if that's the case I'm out of fashion.

The problem with coug's argument isn't that it is a generalization, the problem is that he wants to ascribe beliefs to others that suit his convenience. He wants to use facts that aren't in evidence. I've yet to see a debate where you get to define your opponent's position for him, and then attack him for "holding" the position that you just ascribed to him. But then maybe I haven't seen coug debate before. If you don't want me to characterize this type of argumentation as crude, I'll amend it. It's stupid.
