"It is customary for the one making a generalization to be able to point to some evidence supporting it."

Granted. It is just not always practical to stop the discussion to provide the proofs, especially in a medium such as this one. Sometimes the proofs are simply the opinions of others. My degrees are in disciplines where that kind of thing is legion.

Sometimes the only evidence available which is in support of the generalization is "I've thought about it and that's what I've come up with." That certainly is not sufficient to "prove" any particular point, but it is where a lot of ideas come from (Einstein comes to mind). I have had a lot of ideas which turned out to not be valid. Testing them against the thoughts of my peers as well as available facts has always been a useful exercise. And usually quite enjoyable. "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." But occasionally it has been a very unpleasant experience, almost always unnecessarily so.

The idea police are insatiable.
