Picking on Applied Materials:

The Dow was down 127 yesterday, and the S&P 500 closed below 1,365. Speculative stocks continue mostly to be the best performers.

I remain bearish. I am going to bet on a decline in Applied Materials (AMAT) and tighten some stops.

Why pick on Applied Materials, the world's largest maker of semiconductor-manufacturing equipment? On Wednesday, the stock gapped higher, but closed lower. When Applied Materials has done this in the past at a time when the stock had been relatively strong in the preceding week (as defined by being up more than 9% over any two-day period in the preceding week), it has been down seven out of nine times over the following week. I'm looking for a decline to at least $63.

PS: Can anyone provide any track record of this guy?

G.,

While looking for that stairway to heaven, try reading this...
I can't get a clean URL for those that might want to see the complete story, but it's available on DJN with a keyword search of semiconductors.

Note the 1.3% month over month increase in Capacity Utilization. To me, this is absolutely impressive strength; or an anomaly in the numbers. And I can't think of a plausible explanation for the latter.

SEOUL -- South Korea's industrial output soared 33.1% year-on-year in July, shifting from a fall of 14% in the same month a year ago thanks to rising exports and a pickup in domestic consumption and investments, the National Statistical Office said Sunday.

Such a rise is the highest since August 1976, when the output surged 35.1%, the office said.

In July, production of cars soared 118.9% from a year earlier, production of office accounting machinery such as computers surged 146.8% year on year, while that of semiconductors was up 49.9%, the statistical office said.

Manufacturing plants operated at 81% of their capacity in July, up from 79.7% in June, thanks to a rise in operations at car, semiconductor and oil refining plants.

G., Something off this page would be cool. That is my vote. geocities.com

Save a .wav file, upload it to your geocities site, then put the following code in <bgsound src="anywavefile.wav" loop="1">. You probably want to stick in the <head>...</head> container.
