United Microelectronics Corp. led electronics shares higher on hopes of better earnings. UMC gained 4.5 percent to NT$81. UMC was the second most popular stock among foreigners last week as they were net buyers of 21.6 million shares. The company is widely expected to earn more than NT$3 a share next year, from an estimated NT$1 this year, analysts said.
