Bell of Canada has selected Redback to anchor its one meg modem solution. I am weak on technical issues but I thought Shasta was acquired for this purpose. Maybe Shasta is not ready.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. (BUSINESS WIRE) - Redback Networks, Inc.,
(NASDAQ:RBAK) announced today that Bell Canada (NASDAQ:BCICF) has deployed the Redback Subscriber Management Systema (SMS) 1000 to complement its existing Nortel Networks 1 Meg Modem-based Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service, one of the largest deployments in the
world. Bell Canada is using the Redback SMS 1000 to provision and manage broadband customers at the carrier's Central Office (CO) locations.

Specifically, Bell Canada is using the Redback SMS 1000 to anchor its aggressive wholesale DSL offering, allowing independent Internet service providers (ISPs) to purchase wholesale DSL circuits for resale to consumer and business customers.
"We selected the Redback SMS 1000 because we needed to rapidly implement a cost-effective, scalable wholesale business model," said Glenn Ward, vice president of broadband development at Bell Canada. "Adding the Redback SMS 1000 to our network provides us with the critical component that enables us to offer the combination of scalability, performance and value our ISP customers
require. With the Redback solution in place, we can lower our cost structure and provide immediate wholesale access to new service-provider partners."

Utilizing the SMS 1000, Bell Canada can now offer wholesale DSL services to a large number of independent ISPs quickly and efficiently. Equally important, Bell Canada and its service-provider partners can use the same operational model for DSL subscribers as they currently have in place for
dial-up access technologies. "Without modifying its operational systems,

Bell Canada can capitalize on the lucrative opportunities emerging in the broadband marketplace by rapidly rolling out new services," said Larry Blair, vice president of marketing at Redback. "In addition, the Redback solution allows Bell Canada to offer cost-effective, wholesale DSL services to other Internet or content service providers."

Redback's SMS 1000 is a high-density, highly intelligent networking device deployed at a network access point or a data center to aggregate a high concentration of broadband data traffic. More rumours. Yahoo thread (credibility - well??) has it that NT taking out CS. Companies do work closely together. Anyone have a comment as to whether this would make sense?
