Cisco, IBM $2 billion technology pact over 5 years. CNBC saying not a big deal for companies of this size. Both stocks popped some anyway. cbs.marketwatch.com BM, Cisco in 5-year, $2 billion pact By Jeffry Bartash, CBS MarketWatch Last Update: 10:12 AM ET Aug 31, 1999 NewsWatch ARMONK, NY (CBS.MW) -- IBM said Tuesday it will supply technology, parts and services to Cisco Systems in a deal worth at least $2 billion over five years. Under the deal, IBM (IBM: news, msgs) will sell to Cisco (CSCO: news, msgs) patents and intellectual property related to switches and routers, products that represent the core of the telecommunications equipment maker's business. Big Blue will also sell components, primarily chips, that Cisco will use to help build networks for its customers. In addition, IBM will also provide customer support for companies that use Cisco to set up their data, Internet and computer networks. "Building a powerful network is key to global expansion and e-business strategies," said Sam Palmisano, IBM senior vice president and group executive, IBM Global Services. In recent trading, shares of Cisco rose 7/8 to 67 5/8, while IBM rose 1 5/16 to 124 1/2. The contract is the latest in a series of big deals for IBM, whose goal is to become a dominant computer and networking parts supplier. IBM has already signed agreements this year to supply parts to Dell Computer ($16 billion), EMC Corp. ($3 billion) and Acer Group ($8 billion). Its deals announced so far total $30 billion in 1999, the company said. For Cisco, it can use its alliance with IBM as a springboard to boost sales to companies looking to build or expand their networks in an effort to promote business and commerce over the Internet.
