Storage Device Interface Seminar '99

Introduction from Mr. Dal Allan
The data which is scattered on storage devices over many heterogeneous systems in an enterprise is a corporate asset that has been out of control for many years. The workstation and the PC freed operating departments from the tyranny of the mainframe and control by the (IT) Information Technology group.

Efforts to centralize management of corporate data have been less than successful, despite the cooperative efforts of user departments and the IT group. As the amount of on-line storage increases, so does the cost of managing it, and companies are looking for operating efficiencies. Backup is a critical problem as the 24x7x365 work year provides no opportunity for a separate activity, it must be concurrent with operations.

Fibre Channel has enabled the SAN (Storage Area Network) which is being used by companies to solve these problems. The NAS (Network Attached Storage) offers client access to data over the LAN (Local Area Network), while the back end storage is supported via the SAN.

Early introductions have been extremely successful, and all the major storage vendors have introduced architectures which encompass a broad range of functions. A wide range of products have been introduced and more are on their way.

The speakers will be covering a wide variety of technical, business and application subjects of both the NAS and the SAN.

The ENDL/Nikkei Fall conference brings you the experts who are creating the standards, and developing the technology, of the next century. Progress requires leadership and vision, and attendees will have the opportunity to listen to the individuals who are leading the way.

It takes products to put concepts to work, and following the last session on Monday afternoon, those who are registered for the conference will be able to enjoy hospitality in the relaxed environment of the Exibitors Reception. The Reception provides an opportunity to meet the speakers and the exhibitors in a social setting. Refreshments are served, and speakers will be staffing the product displays alongside their local technical staff. The reception provides an opportunity to view the offerings, talk to the developers, and evaluate how and where they can be used.

Exhibitors guests will be able to visit the product display on Tuesday.

Everyone interested in the challenges and opportunities of storage applications need to be at Nikkei Hall on September 27-28. I look forward to seeing you in the audience.

Dal Allan, ENDL
