I don't trust the government either. Maybe that's why I, alone among our friends (I've brought my hubby into my fold on this, though), don't think all the arms should be the government's.

Sometimes I think the whole gun control thing with politicians is similar to the death penalty issue.

There is a fear of violent crime. There is no evidence whatever, not a shred, that capital punishment deters it. It is a very expensive penalty, using, w/o crime-deterrent benefit, funds that might be put into crime-deterrent programs.

But the issue is very useful for politicians. It's a simple, high-concept issue, just say "Kill them," and it makes people feel good and right even if they aren't an iota safer and maybe are less safe, what with the wasted money and all, and look how you've shown you care about crime. You are tough on crime!

Sometimes I think gun control is being used the same way.

Apparently there is no proof it cuts down crime. And the current rules are not enforced. But it is a great way for politicians to act as though they are tough on crime without doing anything constructive.

And you know what? I've been all through the death penalty debate here, at length and in detail, and shall ignore all posts on this subject, hahaha.
