That penalty is still being meted out in Saudi Arabia, I believe, and possibly other places, for stealing. I don't want to live in one of those places myself.

There is a program called Project Exile whose simple goal is to see to it that convicts who used a weapon (usually but not exclusively a gun) in the commission of their crime gets the appropriate jail sentence - no squishy parole deals. I think Richmond VA implemented it and had a 50% drop in violent crime rates. A nationwide implementation of Project Exile would go *very far* toward dealing with the root issue here ... violent crime.

I wonder why there is such foot-dragging to implement such a simple idea more widely. It sends a clear "gun control" style message without punishing quiet law-abiding gun owners who like to stay out of trouble. Now THAT is the kind of Gun Control I heartily support.
