THE FRONT OFFICE GORILLA GAME This is my end-of-month report of our gorilla game. First, the comparative numbers. History Year Quarter Month Annualized Gorilla Game 91.01% 73.82% -1.58% 17.69% 66.56% S&P 500 18.91% 7.40% -3.81% -0.63% 14.63% Russell 2000 -7.59% 1.39% -6.52% -3.81% -6.04% Though I see these numbers every week, I'm still amazed to see how lousy the Rusell 2000, widely followed as a small- cap index, has done. Most if not all the stocks in the game began as small-cap stocks (depending on your definition.) That sure does remind us that small-cap gorilla candidates have far greater potential than the average small-cap stock. Exactly 12 months ago the gorilla game had the lowest value I've recorded. (I don't record the values daily. I only record them on Fridays and at the end of the month.) Consider the growth since that low of twelve months ago, which was even slightly lower than the depths of October: Gorilla Game 237.48% S&P 500 37.90% Russell 2000 26.60% Now, the stuff about the individual stocks: Shares Stock Port % 1st Buy 2nd Buy Average Now Change 62 Clarify 14.3% $13.25 N/A $13.25 $44.00 232.08% 225 Remedy 28.9% $17.44 $17.50 $17.46 $24.50 40.48% 147 Siebel 52.9% $23.00 $38.44 $27.10 $68.69 198.64% 90 Vantive 3.9% $27.63 N/A $27.63 $8.31 -69.91% The not-real-money portfolio began on May 25, 1998, with $10,000. Commissions are based on $8 per trade. Because the interest earned on the cash is immaterial to the progress of the portfolio, it isn't accounted for. The final numbers: Stocks $19,085.69 Cash $15.61 Total $19,101.30 Disclosure, caveat and all-purpose buyer-beware warning: I own shares of Siebel Systems. I've owned long and short positions of these and other front office software stocks and will continue to consider positions in them. DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK!!!!! :) --Mike Buckley
