Packers P Josh Bidwell undergoes surgery

GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN (TICKER) -- Josh Bidwell of the Green Bay Packers, the first punter selected in the draft, underwent surgery today to treat suspected testicular cancer, the team disclosed tonight.

Bidwell, who was the only punter in camp, was a fourth-round selection of the Packers. The team is unsure of how long it will be without the rookie from Oregon.

"Diagnosis and prognosis will be forthcoming," Packers general manager Ron Wolf said. "We will make information known when it becomes available to us."

Bidwell was coming off his most impressive outing of the preseason, averaging 43.5 yards on six punts against New Orleans on Saturday.

To replace Bidwell, Green Bay claimed first-year punter Chris Hanson off waivers from the Cleveland Browns. The Packers conclude their exhibition season Thursday against Miami.

Packers acquire DE Harris from Eagles for T Michels

GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN (TICKER) -- The Green Bay Packers today acquired defensive end Jon Harris from the Philadelphia Eagles for tackle John Michels in a swap of former first-round draft picks.

The trade reunites Harris with Packers coach Ray Rhodes, who was involved in drafting him in 1997 when Rhodes was coach of the Eagles.

Michels, in turn, will be reunited with new Eagles coach Andy Reid, who was a member of the Packers' staff during Michels' first three seasons in Green Bay. Michels was a first-round pick of the Packers in 1996.

"Right now, John gives me another offensive lineman that knows this system," Reid said. "He'll compete for a starting position and at worst, he gives me another legitimate backup."

Reid and Rhodes hope the change of scenery will benefit both players.

Harris, 25, has been a disappointment in his two years with the Eagles. The 6-7, 295-pounder started four of 16 games at left end last season and finished with 50 tackles, one quarterback sack, four quarterback hurries and three blocked passes.

As a rookie, Harris was hampered by an illness in training camp that caused his weight to drop to 264 pounds. After recovering, he started four games at left end before suffering a toe injury in a game against Arizona that forced him to miss Philadelphia's next five games. He returned for the final four games of the season, seeing spot duty.

Michels, 26, spent the entire 1998 season on injured reserve with a knee injury. He likely will serve as a backup to Jermane Mayberry at right tackle.

"You gain a tremendous person there, No. 1," Reid said. "You have a guy that maybe is not a naturally heavy football player but, through strength training and eating, has been able to put on some weight. And he really has been efficient playing the offensive line. He really is coming off a pretty good preseason after that knee surgery."

After starting nine games as a rookie at left tackle in the Packers' 1996 championship season, the 6-7, 302-pound tackle lost his starting job to Ross Verba the following year. Michels had been listed as the top backup at both left and right tackle in 1998 when he suffered a season-ending knee injury in practice last August.
