If you're saying that Microsoft's code is sometimes analogous to a Ford which will only use Shell gas, then I agree. Otherwise I miss your point. It's not necessary to use Microsoft code to access Microsoft generated files except to the extent they deliberately make communication with the rest of the world difficult -- and for that they should be soundly criticized, not rewarded.

Ed, I agree completely. When it comes to software, one standard is best for everybody. Users have enough problems with their systems crashing with compatible software. I do feel that eventually Microsoft must agree to make Windows public property.
