<<commonly held belief system>>
Why is a belief system any better because it is commonly held? Also, why do you believe that non-traditional spiritual pursuits are without firm grounding?

I am going to simplify the Deep Thinking: ethics is about the kind of people we hope to nurture (allowing for inevitable differences of temperament and interest), and the kind of society we hope to form. Without some consensus, there is no hope of producing a coherent society, and we will either fragment or be at war. Plus, there are certain qualities that we should be able to agree on, such as self- discipline and civility, as being desirable to promote. Whether or not self- help literature has use, we would do better to concentrate on the fundamentals, like the way children are raised, in trying to address these issues.....
