Commonly held beliefs are what hold a civilization together. Not that we shouldn't have diverse views, it would be boring if we all thought in lock-think. Europe was unified under the banner of Christendom, for example.

I have explored some of these "non-traditional" spiritual pursuits. I was a little surprised to learn that there are 3,000 entities in the Hindu pantheon, a lot of them not very nice. In the Baghavad-Gita when Brahman reveals his true nature to Arjuna, is he not a devourer of worlds, with blood from humans dripping from his fangs? How charming.

Don't know much about Buddhism, but W.B. Yeats studied it at length, and he came away "pondering the great Buddha's emptiness."

My favorite pagan, Black Elk, said, "we must stop looking inward and look outward." I'm inclined to agree.
