QLGC...QLogic Selected by Intel to Provide Interface Technology for Internet Based Enterprise Application Business Wire - September 01, 1999 12:19 Jump to first matched term
PALM SPRINGS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 1, 1999--QLogic Corp. (NASDAQ:QLGC), an industry leading designer of advanced, high-performance SCSI and Fibre Channel I/O controllers for direct connect and storage network interfaces, will provide the Fibre Channel interface for an advanced architecture demonstration connecting a 16-node cluster at today's Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in Palm Springs, Calif. The cluster will showcase the ability to deliver the performance, scalability, availability and affordability needed to run the most demanding real world internet-based applications.
The field-proven technology of QLogic's QLA2100 64-bit PCI-to-Fibre Channel adapter provides the maximum throughput and reliable connectivity required in high-performance clustering solutions. The QLA2100 is based on the award-winning architecture of the QLogic ISP2100 Fibre Channel chip. The ISP2100 utilizes an on-chip RISC processor to off-load the work of managing I/O from the server and speed the delivery of data to and from the storage subsystem. The result is a high performance interface technology that provides ease of implementation and performance/efficiency rating that is unmatched in the industry.
"Today's clustering demonstration, featuring Intel's Profusion(TM) chipset goes to show that VI Architecture has moved beyond the demo stage," said Bill Raleigh, Director of Marketing of Intel Enterprise Server Group. "As industry leaders begin to deploy highly scalable clusters, featuring servers based on the Pentium(R) III Xeon(TM) processor, to run next-generation applications, products such as QLogic's Fibre Channel adapter play an important role by delivering the massive data-moving throughput from disk to processor that this kind of ultra-high-capacity environment requires."
"QLogic is pleased to have been selected by Intel to provide the Fibre Channel solution for advanced applications for an IDF demonstration for the second year in a row," stated Laura Raybin, director of marketing for QLogic's Computer Systems Group. "The VI architecture combined with our QLA2100 host bus adapter allows volumes of data to move rapidly between clustered SHV servers while meeting the requirements for performance, scalability and availability."
The concept of clustering has been around for over a decade. Large corporations have relied on clustering of proprietary, mainframe-based systems to deliver the enterprise-class scalability, reliability, availability, and manageability they need for mission-critical applications, particularly in data warehousing and OLTP (online transaction processing). Today, VI Architecture is delivering the benefits of clustering to a wider audience than ever before, at lower price-points than ever before. They're doing it by building clusters around the common building blocks of Intel-based servers.
"Enterprise computing is one of our most exciting and fastest growing areas of opportunity. The growing momentum behind Intel-based servers in high-end, business-critical data center computing, with the announcement of the Pentium(R) III Xeon(TM) processor and future processors, is excellent news for QLogic," stated Larry Fortmuller, vice president and general manager for QLogic's Computer Systems Group. "Faster processors need ever-faster data access. Fibre Channel provides the high-throughput connectivity Intel-based servers require. It is the most efficient, reliable and cost-effective way of enabling storage connectivity for clusters in the enterprise."
