<AT idf they were going to announce some benchmarks, that was my understanding. It was also listed as one of
the things they would discuss in the digests.>

Come on.. don't be surprised or disappointed. If you go
back through history they have been promising Merced
benchmarks going on 3 years now. They can't talk
benchmarks. We have one very good anecdotal point
that Merced benchmarks are lukewarm at best from
a comment by Dr. Bandwidth in comp.arch:

"I cannot go into detail, but [Merced] numbers being thrown around
here [IDF] correspond to numbers (that I saw in a previous life)
generated using rather primitive compiler technology."

For the less informed .. Dr. John is the father of STREAM,
a very important benchmark for high-performance computer
measurement/sizing (measures main memory bandwidth).

Also, in a "former life" John worked at SGI... a noted
last place finisher on CPU metrics. So it wouldn't be
too much of a stretch to say Merced performance is
currently sucking ... hence no talky-talky about performance.
Hushy-hushy instead.
