This has been debunked as a hoax quite thoroughly, and the image is actually just a retouched picture from a VLSI textbook (I forget which one). If you've ever seen a real SEM image of a chip, you'd know that diagonal structures are extremely rare and usually only occur in analog devices or pad rings.
