Well if you count the fact that they went to SLEEP very early because it was dark, they had no light and they were EXHAUSTED, then fine.

Chris, my dear, you must be nuts! I have a background in medieval history, as you know; and they worked like hell. (I remember having a bit of fun in my master's thesis arguing how widespread the use of the eight-ox plough actually might have been! <VBG>)

The possible difference is that for so many people the labor was backbreakingly physical. Today, we have "labor-saving" devices and take for granted the availability of light after the sun sets, so we may be working longer hours and doing more work that requires mental labor.
