Anyone out there a RR customer? Can you tell us what they do other than hook you up and maybe some rudimentary caching?

I should be a RR customer, but plans for this area seem to be on a sliding scale- always "9 months from now".

I believe that indeed all they do is "hook you up". They are nothing more than a cable ISP. That is not necessarily a bad thing, nor does it mean they are not competition. As far as I can tell thats pretty much what the DSL providers do too.

ATHM carries an extra burden from its backbone and its content. The value of these "extras" seems to me to be based on the premise that the internet backbone itself will be insufficient to handle broadband. Under that circumstance having your own network and servers on that network are a great advantage.

If "the net" is fast enough in itself why bother with building your own backbone? This may even be a disadvantage to @home in the long run, I dont really know. Opinions?
Eric

They offer a big fat BB pipe. ATHM offers that and a porthole, so I guess they don't compete.

I'm a RR subscriber and that seems to be about it. If there's some great content they are providing, they haven't done a very good job of letting me know about it. I make a point of logging on to their home page (which is by far the slowest to load of any web site I visit) to remain up to date about their ability to provide content. I see very little other than local stuff that is a watered down version of AOL's local stuff.

RR is the low end of cable. They don't focus on more than just access because 1.) They don't have the money to do anything more then lease cable and 2.) Their business plan is only good as a coffee table coaster.

If RR can get the money they need and find a few good men to run the company then they MIGHT be a competitor to ATHM.

Comparing ATHM to RR is like comparing AOL to your small time ISP in Podunk, Idaho.
