You are talking about agricultural societies, I am talking about pre-agricultural societies. In 1972, Marshall Sahlins published Stone Age Economics, which collected a lot of field work and demonstrated that in pre-agricultural (aka hunter-gatherer) societies, people really didn't work more than a few hours a day.I don't believe that the work of Sahlins has been refuted, every thing I've read on the topic supports it, but I don't really read anthropology journals anymore.
