Forgive my ignorance, but I thought the Hebrew Bible was written before the founding of the Roman empire. In fact, I still think so. And whether or not the Hebrews adopted some of their legal system from other mid-eastern tribes, the fact is that it is the Judeo-Christian principles which dominated the legal and social systems of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, when our legal systems largely began to take their current forms.
