arthur, OT, RE: WinNT/2000

Rather than looking to Win2000 now, you're probably better off installing NT 4.0 with Service Pack 4. For a Microsoft product, the stability is ok with NT 4.0, but you would have needed to wait until Service Pack 2 to get that kind of stability. Brand new Microsoft O/S products uniformly perform horribly until the first couple of service packs come out, and even though Microsoft says that Win2000 is different, there is no upside to believing them.

arthur -
Depending on what you do, Win98 may still be right for you. Win98 has better support for games, some peripherals like cameras and scanners, and is easier to administer (since it does not have the deep security features of NT which can be hard for the less computer savvy to negotiate).

I would need to know more about what you use your machines for, to give you sensible advice on this.

If you do want to go to NT, I would strongly recommend one of the Windows2000 release candidates - DELL is currently shipping Win2K as an "alternate" OS choice on some new machines. As I said in my note to GV, I have been using it for several months and I would not go back to NT4.
