To be done correctly that heater trick takes some sophistication. The first time I tried it, the mercury went all the way up to the top of the thermometer.

I tried to touch the thermometer to the radiator, too, to stay home from school. I think I was really sick, but just wanting an insurance policy. The thermometer burst. So embarrassing. I wish that had appeared on the purity test. "Have you ever held a thermometer on the radiator so you could stay home from school?"
