they've already made some big moves, like NN+NorthChurch this week

Northchurch is an edge router not a high-end "super-router" (I assume you meant core router by that). I don't belive it is that far along either.

PA;

Thanks for the response. In my opinion, Juniper has the lead beyond any of the gigabit router startups. Software development on layer 3 router platforms of the 90's and beyond is a significant undertaking - look at Cisco, they've invested nearly 15 years of development on Cisco IOS.

I don't believe LU or NN will be able to get any other privately held gigabit router startup "on the cheap". Cisco's purchase of Cerent proved that Wall Street has placed a high value on core-equipment companies (Juniper and Redback are both irrationally priced). This is setting the FMV for these vendors and means privately held companies with a viable product "will not be under-sold" : ). Core equipment vendors are selling for huge premiums regardless of whether they are privately or publicly held (Cisco purchased Cerent for $6.9B).

LU or NN have the ability to make a bid for Juniper while saving at least $300M on the purchase price.

The last time I saw any market share numbers quoted in an article for this market Cisco had a 90% share: making it a "Gorilla" in the gigabit router market (if someone has newer market share numbers, please post them). I personally think the only other potential vendor to take the second place position is Juniper... unless NN and LU know something the rest of us don't.
