Sometime in the mid 1980s a friend explained his support for abortion on demand in terms of removing a future undesirable element from society. He figured that the majority of unplanned/unwanted pregnancies were to women who were unable or unwilling to do a good job of raising them. Recognizing the reality that giving babies up for adoption isn't something the majority is willing to do, he figured that abortion was the best real-world alternative. The news report of that study brought back that conversation clearly. I haven't read the study itself, so I don't know if it is statistically valid. But beware of what is termed the post hoc fallacy. A mere statistical correlation does not prove causality. The first time I saw an ultrasound, I had no doubt that a fetus was human life. That does not necessarily mean I'm prepared to man the barricades on the abortion issue. To the extent the link with reduced future social pathology is correct, it's just pro-active capital punishment. I've been ambivalent on the abortion question ever since.
