I think exposure breeds tolerance.

When I was a very little girl (4) my next door neighbors were 2 women. One was a little on the macho side, she wore plaid shirts and she borrowed my dads tools a lot. They were very nice people and good neighbors. They invited me over (or I invited myself over) to see their new kittens or to have fresh lemonaid. I remember as a 4 year old thinking they had decided to be married to each other. I thought it was because they hadn't found men to marry...remember I was 4. Oh, I never saw them touch each other.

My parents never said one single word when I went to visit them. I know they were just biting their tongues trying not to have to deal with the subject.........but I already pretty much figured it out. And it made sense to me. Nice people.

PS They were Professors at UC Berkeley.
