Petz- <The benchmarks I've seen (Anand, I think) show not much benefit from PC133. Acually, they showed that in four out of six applications, the Intel BX outperformed the Apollo PRO 133 (both chipsets at 100 MHz); running the Apollo PRO at 133 MHz was barely enough to make it as fast as the Intel BX at 100 MHz.>

You now bring up an interesting point: re, Platform Performance vs. the benchmarks of the individual components. This is one area I expect Intel to focus on in its messages to potential customers.

Petz,

<This brings up a point about VIA that bugs me. Their chipsets are just not as fast as Intel's.>

And, they are not as expensive either. So, there is a tradeoff.

<I doubt that the engineers at VIA are dumb, its just that there are tricks that can be done in the chipset if you know the innards of the CPU. Hopefully, the Athlon chipsets will have this "inside knowledge" advantage.>

I don't about "dumb"-ness but it might just be an issue of learning curve. Intel has more experience with all the aspects of PC performance than probably anyone else in the business. VIA definitely seems to have closed the gap but, nevertheless, I find the performance disparities fascinating.

I wonder if the problem is that Apollo PRO 133 is just not ready. Remember how the early bootleg K7 testing showed really bad FP? I very curious of the status of Via's new chip sets for both Athlon and Coppermine. Is the design optimized and stable and can they support the production ramp for the xmas season? If yes then they can reap a huge windfall from the Rambus mess. If no, then they are just smoke.
