When I was much younger I spent a coupla weeks in Colombo. I made a point of sitting on the veranda at dusk. The crows and bats came out then. I quickly learned to distinguish them when they weren't close enough to ID the surprisingly small differences in their silhouettes.
The bats had somewhat slower wingbeats. Rhythm turned out to be the ticket to telling them apart. It was a very cool sight.
