Bux,

<< carriers make technology choices based upon profitability. Profitability is influenced by many factors of which interoperability is a minor consideration >>

Technology choices are sometimes dictated by legislation and interoperability is sometimes legislated by governments and regulatory bodies. Profitability is indeed influenced by many factors.

<< The first CDMA networks in Europe will be primarily for data >>

They certainly will be. The first 3G networks in Europe will I suspect be UMTS (evolved GSM with a W-CDMA air interface). You may call that a CDMA network. I do not. I'm certainly looking forward to a CDMA network (cdma2000) in Europe and interested in how seemingly requisite interoperability with UMTS is achieved.

<< our individual perception of time >>

Our perception of time may be somewhat different. From an investment point of view my horizon is 5 years when 3G will be starting to produce meaningful meaningful revenue and as a result meaningful royalties for Qualcomm regardless of 3G technology flavor. As a wireless user right now I'm looking forward to a "tomorrow" that cost effectively offers something approximating my V.90 modem connection or perhaps even ISDN speed. I'm 2.1 miles from a telco but can't yet obtain ASDL or cable connectivity (coming soon they say) so haven't begun to think about what I'm going to do with huge chunks of bandwidth available 5 years out, but I'm sure I'll have a use.
