The way I see it developing over the next few years is that vouchers will be mainly be used by kids in disadvantaged areas first. Then it will gradually spread to the more suburban areas of the country.

Charter schools are anything but a give-away to rich kids. Many teachers unions and school districts in an effort to prevent the adoption of voucher systems, have put forth the "charter schools" concept. Both ideas represent an improvement over the complete monopolistic entities known as our government schools.

We need to put the "customer" back in charge of education. Namely, the parents and kids, instead of the local funding source. It would throw a huge "Urgency to change" wake up call into our K1-K12 school systems, and greatly encourage everyone involved to find better ways of improving the delivery of knowledge to our children. I can think of NO more important issue facing our country, than the development of the minds of our children.

When are we going to wake up as a nation and realize the public school system is in desperate need of systemic change in order to improve it? From teachers strikes, to low test scores, high illiteracy rates, dropouts and violence. The symptoms of decay are all around us.

Vouchers may not be a utopian answer, but they at least represents a dramatically different way of looking at the issue. And who knows, it may just work wonderfully!

It sure couldn't hurt much even in a worst case scenario.
