CR,
I may be wrong, but I think your analogy of MSFT selling everyone a generator and "distributed computing" selling everyone usage--that if Msft ran the electric company everyone would have a generator in the basement--comes from Oracle's Larry Ellison. It's a good one. I was thinking more of a "HotMail" or Yahoo Mail model, that is, free. Those services let you use email software on line if you're willing to put up with a few ads. Sun plans to give away the Star Division office applications and make their money supporting the people who provide those applications to you and me. You're of course right that bandwidth and reliability are necessary for sustained use of online applications. It has to seem to the user as though its a local application. My point was that AOL is particularly well positioned to exploit on-line business applications either through the Netscape brand or though AOL.
Best,
--Steve
