Scott: Japan is a difficult situation to deal with because the technologies are different there. For example, the frequencies for sending and the receiving are reversed from elsewhere in the world. Therefore phones which work in Japan don't elsewhere. Up to recently.

Of particular interest though is that GSM does not exist in Japan. Japan is one of the few countries in the world with zero GSM.

DoCoMo is the wireless arm of the giant NTT which was the monopoly telephone company there. DoCoMo and other companies use analog and a unique Japanese technology called PHS. PHS is a cheap but limited digital system and will not be a challenge to CDMA in Japan as a practical matter.

DoCoMo has been a leader in trying to develop a CDMA flavor for the third generation of wireless called WCDMA which up to now is not in commercial operation anywhere.

The question is will DoCoMo wait for WCDMA or will the rapid roll out of CDMA One by two other Japanese companies make that wait too costly and impractical.

In sum, CDMA has a uniques advantage in Japan. There is no installed GSM base. That is the key.

And CDMA is picking up customers in Japan rapidly and cutting into DoCoMo's business.

All most interesting.

Since I am not a tech wiz I may be off a bit, so if so would appreciate correction. But think the main points are accurate to my knowledge.

Chaz

PS This is a complicated situation so generalizations may miss some part of the picture. Assume others will amend and correct.

DoCoMo is the cellular spinoff from NTT -- Nippon Tel and Tel - run by a super sharp japanese guy, who formerly ran NTT - i believe it is the world's largest telco - anyway, full CDMA commitment - wild growth in Japan -
