chalu, by Taiwan supporting independence, they are doing a lot for us (if you subscribe to the theory that Communism is worse than evil, and should be erradicated from the face of history). It is not normal for them to sacrifice guaranteed income for a philosophical cause.

hmm, I hardly think the Timorese are in a position to send their military to help the US out. I agree it would be nice to see a system of mutual help, but it's difficult to justify not helping someone who's in trouble just cause you think they won't return the favour. If I saw someone being attacked in the street I wouldn't ask if they can give me a favour before helping them out. And don't expect anything in return, just do it cause it's right, and hope someone would do the same for me if the positions were reversed. America is in the fortunate position of being able to help many weaker nations out of trouble.
