I would like to dispell the myth commonly held that Hong Kong is oppressed by communist China, as a Hong Kong resident I have heard news about Falun Gong in local media, TV news, newspapers etc. Beijing may have told the Hong Kong press to stop reporting these things, but it has not stopped them.

Hong Kong operates under a set of laws called the Basic law, which was agreed upon by both Britain and China before the handover. Mainland China does have to power to influence Hong Kong, only by applying political pressure, they cannot dictate as they do in Commnist China.

Too often foreign press exagerates Hong Kongs situation due to Chinas history, such as the news on the day of the handover showing the chinese military lined up against the border waiting to cross into Hong Kong. No one in Hong Kong knew about this except by watching the news, 'cause it was in an isolated area the news (including local news) made it seem as though they had paraded through the main streets or something

sorry for going on so long about something that's not all that important to you guys, but I have seen this sort of misunderstanding about Hong Kong a few times and thought it would be good to get the record straight.
