I guess the major things that bother me about incarcerating non-violent users are that they don't necessarily get any treatment, and that they wind up with criminal records. Thus, even if they later "see the light" like GWB supposedly did, they do not have the same opportunities he has due to having a record. The only reason he doesn't have a record is he wasn't caught. This is where I think he's being a hypocrite: by being so hard on mere possession, he's denying many in the same boat he was in the opportunities he now enjoys by branding them for life.

So you would agree to some sort of program that not only would "lock up" offenders but also make part of their sentence mandatory treatment programs?

Seems this might be a good way of at least resurrecting some lives and maybe making sure they do not return to the lock up. Do we not have these types of programs now?

And I agree with you that "they" don't deserve it.... but who of us ever "deserves" anything? """But for the Grace of God go I.""
