PACKERS PRESS RELEASE
09/07/99

The Green Bay Packers have traded veteran defensive back Craig Newsome to
the San Francisco 49ers for a future, undisclosed draft choice, Executive
Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.

A first-round draft selection out of Arizona State in 1995, Newsome had
been a three-year starter at left cornerback. He started 38 consecutive
games in 1995 and 1996, including playoffs, before tearing the anterior
cruciate ligament in his left knee on the first play from scrimmage of the
regular season in the Packers' 1997 opener against the Chicago Bears and
spending the season on injured reserve.

Returning to the field in 1998, he started 13 games at left cornerback in
addition to the team's playoff loss to the 49ers. He was inactive for the
Packers' three other regular-season contests because of a deep knee
laceration suffered in a game at Minnesota November 22.

The 28-year-old San Bernardino, Calif., native finished seventh on the team
with 51 total tackles, also posting one interception and being credited
with 11 passes defensed.

Author of a club rookie-record 19 passes defensed as a first-year performer
in 1995, he made his first pro touchdown a memorable maneuver when he
scooped up an Adam Walker fumble on the 49ers' first play from scrimmage in
an NFC divisional playoff contest and raced 31 yards into the end zone to
give the Packers a 7-0 lead in an eventual 27-17 upset victory at San
Francisco.

Newsome followed that productive campaign by registering a career-best and
team-high 23 passes defensed in 1996, his second pro season, while posting
71 tackles (61 solos). He went on to record a team-high 7 passes defensed
in the playoffs, including interceptions of the 49ers' Elvis Grbac,
Carolina's Kerry Collins and the Patriots' Drew Bledsoe in consecutive
games, the last of his thefts coming in the Packers' 35-21 Super Bowl XXXI
victory over New England.

Overall, Newsome started 46 games during his four Green Bay seasons, plus 7
playoff contests, and made 207 tackles (178 unassisted). He also had made 4
interceptions, been credited with 53 passes defensed and one forced fumble.

Newsome had started the Packers' first three preseason games this year but
was replaced by rookie Antuan Edwards in last week's non-league finale
against Miami, Edwards filling in for fellow rookie Mike McKenzie of
Memphis State, who has been named the regular-season starter at the
position by Head Coach Ray Rhodes.

In another transaction, the Packers signed free agent defensive back Tyrone
Bell of North Alabama to their practice squad. Bell, 6-2 and 210 pounds,
had been a sixth-round selection of the San Diego Chargers in 1999, who
placed him on waivers Sunday in their final roster cutdown for the regular
season. Bell, who has been assigned jersey number 48, was four-year letter
winner and three-year starter as a collegian.
