The KKK, Neo-Nazis, etc, are nuisances to us all. I could easily be a victim of the KKK if I were in the wrong place at the wrong time. I have friends from all sorts of ethnicity, Jewish friends, and so on. There's not much any of us can do about those kind of groups that isn't already being done. I very strongly doubt, no matter how conservative some posters are here, that you will find anyone on this thread who would support the actions of those groups, however. Their legacy will continue from father to son, no matter how much you try to reach out. Now I'm turning pessimistic...

Interesting post Dennis, And please correct me if I present a wrong impression or assumption toward your post. I assume you feel it is possible to look upon homosexual behavior as distasteful without necessarily being caught up in a religios mindset? The difference between tolerance and acceptance is a bit tricky in this context though, but let's examine it. Tolerance- The capacity for or practice of recognizing and respecting the opinions, practices, or behaviors of others. Acceptance- The act or process of accepting. The state of being accepted or acceptable. Favorable reception approval. Belief in something agreement. Very closely aligned I would say. So now let's consider how these words placed in curriculum toward a bunch of 3rd graders would manifest themselves. How do you see tolerance being taught without acceptance being at the root of the understanding? I would venture to say that most conservatives would agree with this basic tenant. "I'm tolerant of homosexuals and believe they can do whatever they want to do in the privacy of their own homes, but please, keep your sexual orientation to yourself and don't try and force it onto my 3rd grade child in school. At least until you can teach every child how to read first." Now unto your second concept of "hate crimes". The way I see the term hate crimes being used is nothing more than "political correctness" being brought to bear on murder or other acts of terror. Is a murderer any less of a murderer because he/she killed a homosexual, black or hispanic person, then if the person was a white male christian? I would further argue that more murders take place against people of faith solely because they profess that faith around the world, then takes place against homosexuals. Remember Colombine High? That little girl who was shot in the head because she professed a belief in God? Why weren't liberals on the "hate crimes" bandwagon against the killing of a christian child? If liberals were truly concerned about crime they would be screaming bloody murder regarding the idea that the President is going to let a bunch of murdering terrorists out of prison in order to help his wife get elected. You want to decrease violence and hate in our society? One solution seems to work amazingly well. Punishment. And make the punishment fit the crime.
