Two i820 mobos up Intel sleeves...

Sources at Intel Israel told The Register early this morning that the chip giant will ship at least two versions of i820 Caminos when info is released on the 27 September next.

Intel is readying both the Vancouver VC820 and another mobo believed to be called the Fairbanks, based on the Camino chip set.

The chip giant is hedging its memory bets, said Intel Israel. One allows people to move quickly from the BX set to the 820, while the other is intended to satisfy wide demand for the PC-133 SDRAM standard.

Last week, at the Intel Developer Forum, the chip giant hedged its bets on future DRAM technology, as reported here.

Our info goes like this. The Vancouver board is intended as a channel mobo, and Intel is claiming Rambus is, so to speak, the "bee's bollocks" on the Vancouver.

But the CC820 -- a separate mobo -- is the "bee's knees" for SDRAM PC-133.

That confirms our reports last week that Intel is a havering and a wavering over its Rambus technology. (We do wish Intel would come clean about this, rather than making us call every distie in the Western World...)

The boards will be available, in both varieties, in week 42, according to a German distributor familiar with these matters and Intel's plans.

Intel will sell the two types of i820 board either individually or in boxes of 10, the German distributor confirmed.

As usual, Intel in the US was not available for comment at press time. Some boards will come with Soundblaster audio, while some will not.

Other information from the German distie reveals that the Lan configuration of the CA 810 is on hold because the RJ45 Lan connector is not working as it should.

Again, Intel was not in 24x7 mode... ®http://193.122.103.82/990909-000001.html

Dell Reveals 'First-Ever' Rambus Benchmarks
By Bert McComas Sept 6, 1999

At the Intel Developer Forum (Sept 1st 1999 in Palm Springs, CA) Jay Bell, Senior Fellow of Dell Computer disclosed the first publicly released benchmark results for the Rambus/Camino platform.

Though the results have yet to be independently verified, performance figures quoted by Mr. Bell generally indicate that under normal conditions, Rambus degrades the performance of Microsoft Office 2000 applications by an average of 25% as compared to PC100. Using a benchmark called Office Bench, Dell's engineers contrasted a BX chipset platform using 100MHz SDRAM against a Camino platform with 800MHz Direct Rambus. Other than DRAM and chip set, both systems were configured identically with 500MHz processors.

The results in the charts and commentary below were graphically extracted from the original presentation material delivered at IDF. Black and white scans of the original charts are available.

I was expecting no real improvement, not this. Is this guy bogus? There was a comment posted by Mike Magee that purported to have overheard a conversation regarding similar information, but it was very vague.
