I would love to promote StarOffice to all my friends.. Today I was telling them about it, but dared not say tooooo much... Because? Because I can't get it to work... Definite bummer on my part, but I might as well spill the beans here. Maybe someone at Sun will take action and get this problem corrected... First I down loaded StarOffice from The StarDivision web site when I heard rumors of the acquisition.. via a 56k modem..no big deal. I didn't try installing it till after the announcement... Well it installed just fine, but would get a General Protection Fault on the first "desktop" screen just as it was finishing loading.. Well uninstalled... installed... etc..same problem. So... Downloaded it again from the Sun web site. Pretty much the same thing. This time the GPF comes at a screen asking if I want to use the star office browser as the default browser (only other option as the default browser is MS IE...geesh!!! netscape not an option right now)... Problem persists. I do understand that these things happen... but! Trying to resolve the problem, I do what the Sun Staroffice web site tells me to do.. Use the Newsgroup for installation on windows...sun.com So I've posted three messages to the newsgroup The first about 7 days ago... another yesterday (as follows, help if you can...). And another asking why the questions aren't getting answered via the newsgroup... One more time on the GPF... Any ideas.. Several people are having this same problem... SOFFICE caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0002:00006698. How can we promote it if we can't get it to work??? Cheers, Roger Unfortunately it doesn't seem like there is any support for those with problems via the newsgroup... So where does one go???? One thing I did do to try and find out more info, was make some phone calls to Sun.. After two, I found a good number for Staroffice support... The person answered with "Staroffice" something or another.. I asked him a few questions about the newsgroup support..he gave me some runaround and even asked about if the product was "purchased", I said "no" of course and he said something about only providing support for "purchased" software... OMG!!! I asked him if he realized Sun was giving away SO of FREE... He side stepped a bit and said yes..hmmm.. I told him about what the Sun web site says for support... I don't think he realized much about the IMPORTANCE of Sun's plan with StarOffice.sun.com Newsgroups Sun's Staroffice support newsgroups are maintained by our engineers. All questions are answered by our technical specialists as well as professional Staroffice users. The guy did admit that he thought Sun was trying to set up contract support for StarOffice. Well.. Nuff of that phone call. My problem is Sun is obviously not even close to being set up to provide support for the Staroffice product.. Hate to admit it, but this needs to be looked at... Hopefully someone of position at Sun will see this and get people at least answering questions via the newsgroups they've set up... My fingers are tired... hope I didn't bore anyone... Cheers, Roger
