We have strayed a bit from the original point, which was, what motivates a person to act virtuously? If a person knows that his world is bigger than just the sensations he experiences, he is more inclined to act in virtuous manner. If a person believes he is an amorphous collection of cells that has no soul, he is more inclined to behave ruthlessly.

The basic rules of human social conduct antedate all known religions,

Your basis for this is what? I would submit the possibility that religion and basic rules of human social conduct developed simultaneously. Indeed, I think religions developed to give legitimacy to rules of social conduct in societies which didn't have developed legal systems.
