>If a person believes he is an amorphous collection of cells that has no soul, he is more inclined to
behave ruthlessly.<

Not sure if history bears this out. Imo if a person believes that he is doing God's work he is as inclined to behave ruthlessly and rationalize it.

Hi Charley,

The following was in today's Chicago Tribune:

"A University of Michigan study released in December 1997 found that 44 percent of Americans go to church once a week, compared with 27 percent of the British, 21 percent of the French and 4 percent of Swedes. Yet we are 10 times as murderous as all those unchurched folks."

So going to church does does not seem to make us virtuous.

The article also state that "The bible belt has more than its share of praying and killing. Lousiana has the highest churchgoing rate in the country, but the murder rate is more than twice the national average."

Interesting reading I thought.

Erase Hate,
Dennis

True believers of many types behave with appalling cruelty to humans who are not part of their group. We like to think our codes of behaviour stem from the divine; if they did, the us/them distinction that governs all of our relations would not exist.

My preferred solution is not to make everyone religious - this couldn't be done without coercion anyway, and might cause as much violence as it would prevent - but to expand the concept of "us" to include the entire race. I suppose we would have to find a "them".

Perhaps there is a social utility to flying saucers....
