Maurice: Don't hold your breath for the US to "act". Maybe, but maybe not. Agree Indonesia is a major test. But China is the focus of the Clinton admin. Let me name the ways, well......maybe better not.

Expect the "make nice" approach re China I suggested earlier - despite Indonesian slaughter.

M!- Another interesting conversation with a Chinese friend tonight provided some interesting insights. First he said, a lot of people in the Mainland are neutral to Taiwan's independence. He pointed ut that Taiwan is aware that independence may fare well in the short term, but in the long term (say the next 20 years) as China gains huge economic power, it may be in Taiwan's best interest to stay aboard the mother ship. Food for thought anyway.
