Ford Ikon chooses India as its global base

Ford Motor Company has chosen India as the global export base for its newly designed car, Ikon. Cars from India would be sourced for markets in South Africa, Mexico, and South America.

Mr. Martin Lutton, Chief Program engineer of the Ikon, said that the car has been designed at the company's global small vehicle center at Dunton, near London, especially for the Indian Market. Products designed in Dunton, accounts for 6.6mn cars annually or 42% of Ford's global product volume. The Ikon is a three-box car and a derivative of the Ford Fiesta, which Ford considers ideal for India. The car will be manufactured at the company's plant in Chennai and the car will have high localization level of 70%. Ikon will be powered by 1.6 and 1.8 liter engines and will be available in both petrol and diesel versions.
