OK, the hate crime bit might have been a bit of hyperbole, but in the present climate I can see it theoretically. Preachers who speak out against homosexuality, for example. I know a lawyer who defends pro-life activists on a pro bono basis. He had a case a while back with the defendants being a couple of old ladies who would say the rosary in front of an abortion clinic a couple of times a week. To arrest those ladies violated the first amendment and violated our sense of decency. The Dept. of Justice has lobbied for legislation to have abortion protestors treated as terrorists under the law. I've been out of the loop lately, I don't know how far this idea has gotten.
