richard,

Over the past N (10?) years, Rambus has had a couple of iterations of memory. "Concurrent" is the type used in the current Nintendo games, I believe, and was the most recent form. But going forward, no one is going to be using any other form except for Direct Rambus DRAM (DRDRAM), so saying RDRAM, DRDRAM, or Direct RDRAM pretty much refers to the same thing.

Dave

<edit: Just saw everyone elses posts. Since no one's talking about Concurrent RDRAM, I use the terms interchangeably.>

RE: <Thread... (1) RDRAM (2) DIRECT RDRAM...

Shorts or Longs can anyone please explain the difference between these two DRAMS. From what I can gather there is a difference. The question then is are we making comparisons from specs on RDRAM when we should be comparing specs from DIRECT RDRAM? Or are we referring to DIRECT RDRAM but taking about RDRAM?>

Rambus is now on their third generation, the Direct Rambus dram. The first generation was called Rdram but was soon superceded by a new design called Concurrent Rambus dram. Since the first generation was soon forgotten about, the second generation quickly became known simply as Rdram. This second generation actually achieved one successful design win which went to volume production and is still in production today. (NOTE: Unclewest and I are arguing over whether there were more.) When Intel decided to annoint Rambus as the next generation dram standard the first thing they did is said that Rdram wasn't good enough and so Rambus began a long and stressful redesign called Direct Rdram which was the offical name of the current generation.

In order to differentiate between the 2nd and 3rd generation designs some people (like myself) have continued to reserve Rdram for the 2nd generation design and use drdram to mean Direct Rdram so that there is no confusion such as occurs when Unclewest surfs through the web and discovers the Chromatic MPACT product uses Rdram and flips cartwheels over it on this thread even though this was the old 2nd generation Rdram and Chromatic has been out of business for over a year.

However it seems that now Rambus has dropped the Direct Rdram name and is just calling it Rdram and most people always just called it Rdram so it appears to be a thankless job in trying to keep it differentiated from the 2nd generation and so I think I'll just start calling it Rdram too.
