<<What if God used evolution as a method for creation? >> I believe they call this theo-evolution. In fact, I consider myself a theo-evolutionist.The Christian church is living now on the basis of capital from the past; traditional patterns of thought that have not yet been challenged sufficiently in the minds of the masses. That will not long endure. . . Unless theological truth can be separated from pre-scientific understandings and rethought in ways consistent with our understanding of reality, the Christian faith will be reduced to one more ancient mythology that will take its place alongside the religions or Mount Olympus. I believe there is a lot of truth in the above statement by Spong. It is too bad that many consider the Bible to be infallible when it comes to scientific truth. It robs the Bible of its true beauty. But, I think I can understand why. They have been taught that the Bible is the "Literal Word of God." Therefore, if it false in part, then it is false in all. Their faith security system is built on sand. It cannot and will not survive, and they have no sense that there is any alternative save despair, death, and meaninglessness. This is enough to cause their fear to erupt in to anger. Crucify the heretics! I wonder if those who consider the Bible as being true in all matters of science understand the ramfications of Joshua 10:12-18. The writer of the day thought the sun and moon traveled around the earth which was the center of their universe. So in Joshua they thought the sun and moon just stopped their journey for 24 hours. Today we know that it is the earth which spins on its axis that make the sun appear to go around the earth. We also know that if the earth stopped spinning for just a moment, that the gravitational effects would destroy earth. For an additional illustration consider the following comments of Spong on the flood of Noah's day:Most people remember that narrative only in terms of rain for forty days and forty nights, but a careful reading of the biblical text will reveal that it was the fountains underneath the dry land, accompanied by the rain, that brought about the flood. The separation of the waters in the heavens from the waters of the earth, which had been the primary act of creation, was allowed to be undone. "On that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth and the windows of the heavens were opened" (Gen. 7:11). The literal account in the Bible says that the waters covered the whole earth. "And the waters prevailed so mightily upon the earth that all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered; the waters prevailed above the mountains, covering them fifteen cubits deep" (Gen. 7:19,20). A cubit is an ancient unit of length varying from eighteen inches to sometimes twenty-one inches, or more. The Himalayan mountains soar to 28,028 feet in Mount Everest. For the flood story to be literally true, water more than five miles deep would have had to cover the earth. Since the earth is round, not flat, the water could not simply fall off the edges so that dry land could appear. If the polar ice cap melted, it might place coastal cities under water, but a five mile depth of water covering the entire earth is more water than any of us could imagine. It is also a quantity that could not ever be absorbed by the earth.. A universal flood that covered the whole earth to the depth of fifteen cubits is not a fact of human history. It exists only in our mythology. Cisco
