Tiger Paw:You said: " evolution is a fact ". You need to clarify this post: a) are you saying that " we are observing a change of appearances , so that the "fact" is the change of appearance , which I can accept. or, b)are you saying that evolution is a fact , meaning we have developed this fantastically complex and organized world, randomly, out of chaos, a mathematical impossibility ; ( ie you cannot develop an organized stucture out of chaotic motion ). By the way,I see no current Biology textbook that claims evolution to be " a fact "; if you are aware of one , can you please provide us with a URL, TA PS Sorry for answering late to your post but I just started following this thread. you saidTo: Akula who wrote (7) From: TigerPaw Sunday, Sep 12 1999 6:26PM ET Respond to Post # 16 of 426 Sure evolution is a theory Evolution is a fact. It's just that most people don't know what a scientist means by a fact. It is also accepted by scientists that it is a fact that the Earth and planets revolve around the sun. What does this mean? Does it mean there is no other explanation? No - There is the tiniest chance that indeed the Earth is the center of everything and all else moves in the most complex and convoluted way to accomplish this fact. A fact is not TRUTH , it is just an idea which is so superior to alternative explanations that they are discounted to unworthy of further examination. The fact of evolution lies in the millions and millions of fossils all of which have changing forms and chemical compositions which indicate that they come from a multi-billion year sequence of changes (as opposed to an absurd explanation such as they are spontaneous castings of bacteria which has just recently gone extinct). The fact of evolution is that life today is different from life in the past, but is decendant from life in the past. There are theories about how the fact of evolution is accomplished. The two primary are Natural Selection and Punctuated Equilibrium. Do not confuse these theories with the fact of evolution. TP
