Re: Hambricks and Quislings and Machiavelli, Inc."This could be very negative," said analyst Ed Snyder of Hambrecht & Quist Inc., postulating that in one scenario, "what they have to say about the company isn't positive and they want to wait until Wednesday's analyst meeting and dump it all out there." He said possible bad news could be related to the company's admission two weeks ago that handset prices were quickly falling and margins weren't improving as much as expected. Note, my children, if you didn't read between the lines here, note well: once again H&Q misses no opportunity to spin news about Q to their advantage, and do so with their usual mendacious, deadly subtlety. After all the sniping, inaccurate, slanted negative comments above, they add (seemingly now being "evenhanded"):But he also pointed to a "bull side of the story that they will announce the sale of their handset division, in which case the stock will definitely trade up in the short term." So now, if IJ or Sulpizio says at the meeting on Wednesday that "the handset division is going great guns, we're going to blow out the doors with Thinphone sales, there's no way we'd ever sell the division", it has a chance to be interpreted by the Street as a negative , because according to H&Q the "bull side" of the QCOM story right now is the possibility that the handset division will be sold. They're trying to set themselves up to win (i.e., drive the price down for their hedge fund cronies) no matter what happens and no matter what the real story is...and you know, they may just succeed. Machiavelli would be proud. -Rose- (PS: Full disclosure - took today as an opportunity for some tax positioning...sold most Q shares in my non-retirement account, then bought immediately into equivalent position in deep-in-the-money Jan2001 LEAPS calls. Also sold a boatload of Jan2000 155 puts for $21-22 when we were mired in the mid-153 range - guess how much I expect them to be worth when they expire? Now if we can just get back to above 160 or so by Friday...fun stuff, isn't it?)
