a whole slew of non-religious private schools would spring up.

I think its a whole lot more complicated than politicians let on though. You'd have to make sure that the vouchers really did completely cover a year of educational expenditures - otherwise, its discriminatory towards the poor. So that would mean the big states would need to do a little more than just dole out the 4K voucher/student statewide... for sure that would work in Bakersfield but not Oakland... then you get into this districting argument mess (how much for a voucher in LA vs. SF, etc.)

The only local voucher proposal we had out here recently was proposed by the republican running for school superintendent. It was $700. per student per year. LOL! Why not just write the wealthy parents a check for $700 no strings attached?

<<By saying you don't want tax money going to religious schools, you are saying you would support a voucher system that excluded payments to religious institutions, right?>>

I really haven't given the voucher system much thought because my kids are grown and it does not effect me directly unless my taxes start going up. However the voucher system seems to avoid the issue which is poor schools in general. Some kids will escape the poor schools by going to a private institution but what about the kids that are left behind.

I think I would oppose a voucher system primarily because it helps only some kids and does not address the problem of poor schools in general. I would rather see the existing schools upgraded to give a better education to all.

I do not know how to accomplish all that because I am not a educator but I think the voucher system to any private school is not the answer for all the students.
