Charles:

I do not quite agree with you. The players will be
BRCM and INTC. You may not have realized it, but in
98, Level One bought a company called Acclaim Communications
whose founder had founded earlier Kaplana. Acclaim
was focusing on layer 3 and 4 chips. The new INTC
processors originate from this acquisition, and from
the acquisition of Softcom.

BRCM made similar acquisitions (a subsidiary of Alliance
Semiconductor, a company called Maverick Networks,
and Hothaus).

PMCS has a very strong position in the ATM chip
segment, but its focus appears narrower. So, my bet
would be BRCM versus INTC.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy
